Dance Class Descriptions

Join our dance classes! We have dance classes for kids 2.5 years to teens 13+. We also offer advanced ballet class in the method of the Society of Russian Ballet that are offered by referral only. Join classes at Front & Centre for dance classes in many different styles with a standard of excellence in technique.
This is a 30 minute ballet class for boys and girls 2.5-3 year olds. Songs, props, and musical instruments will be incorporated into some classes to evoke creativity. Students enhance their coordination, and mental development and begin to develop spatial awareness through dance and play. This program is great for beginners because learning takes place in a fun, comfortable and safe environment. Dancers will perform in their own in-house recital at the end of the term.
Movement and Music
This is a 30 minute movement class for boys and girls 2.5-3 year olds. Songs and musical instruments are incorporated into this dance class. This program teaches music and dance fundamentals through nursery rhymes, songs and games. This program is great for beginners because learning takes place in an encouraging atmosphere. The students will go on many magical adventures singing and dancing along the way!
Combo Fun Jazz/Ballet and Combo Fun Jazz/Tap
This class is a natural progression from the Pre Ballet program for 3-4 year olds. Students will gain confidence and expand on social skills in this 45 minute class. The fundamentals of jazz and ballet, or jazz and tap are introduced in a fun, creative way. Dancers work on increasing flexibility, as well as improving coordination and rhythm.
Combo Fun Jazz/Hip Hop and Combo Fun Acro/Jazz
This dance class is a natural progression from the other Combo Fun programs for boys and girls 5-6 years of age. Students will gain confidence and expand on social skills in this 45 minute class. The fundamentals of Jazz and Hip Hop, or Jazz and Acro are introduced in a fun, creative way. Dancers work on increasing flexibility, as well as improving coordination and rhythm while exploring the wonderful world of dance.
This form of dance improves posture, poise, grace, and technique. Ballet is the backbone for all other dance forms. The technique developed in ballet is the fundamental training that applies to all other dance forms. Dancers spend time at the barre, improving their posture and balance while stretching and strengthening their muscles. The remainder of the class is spent centre floor where dancers practice leaps, turns, and centre progressions. Dancers are taught under the method of Society of Russian Ballet and will learn the appropriate terminology for each movement. Exams are offered on a referral bases.
This class is for dancers who have been studying ballet for several years. Dancers will build strength in their feet and ankles while being instructed on proper shoe care and pointe skills. In beginner levels students will spend time at the barre, focusing on balance and improving strength. Dancers will progress to centre floor exercises and combinations on pointe. Safety and injury prevention is a very important aspect of this dance class.
This form of dance is characterized by its energy and variety. Dancers practice many turns and jumps from the corner, and later perform combinations and routines to upbeat music. Dancers will learn musicality, technique, practice isolations and improve upon their flexibility. Jazz dancers can be found dancing in musicals, on stage, at concerts, on cruise ships, at theme parks, and in many music videos. Jazz dance is energetic, vibrant, and continues to be an integral part of the entertainment industry.
Acro is the combination of gymnastics and jazz movement. This program is designed for dancers who want to increase their flexibility, control, and strength. Dancers will be shown how to execute tricks properly and safely. Students will blend dance and gymnastics in an expressive and creative way as seen in performances such as Cirque du Soleil.
Acro Tricks is a class for Acro students who wish to further their flexibility, mat tricks, tumbling and partnering skills. This class is a lovely addition to any of our Acro classes and does not participate in the year end recital.
This is a form of dance that focuses on coordination, timing, and syncopated rhythm. There is a strong focus on musicality and understanding rhythm. Tap is an expression of movement through sound. In this class dancers will improve flexibility and strength in their ankles, while creating sounds and rhythms with their feet. Dancers will learn about the history of tap, and become familiar with various tap legends to better understand this art form. This is a fun class that will help keep you on your toes!
This form of dance focuses on style and coordination. The styles of the movements are bouncy, fast, and funky. Hip Hop stems from street dancing and is similar to what you might see in music videos. Dancers will gain enough confidence to show off their moves on the dance floor with their friends. It is a high energy, fun class that moves to the trendy music of today which children, teens and adults will all recognize and enjoy dancing to.
This form of dance is the fusion of ballet and jazz technique. Lyrical students should have some knowledge of ballet training. Emphasis is placed on dance moves that relate directly to the song or music. These dance moves show expressive feeling and/or emotion through fluid and graceful movements. Dancers will develop flexibility, strength and balance through creative exercises and dance routines.
Contemporary is designed to develop the mind, body, and spirit to be an expressive communicator through movement. It follows closely with modern style dancing and was originally developed from many different dance styles and cultures. Structured technical exercises that condition the body for strength, coordination and flexibility are developed. Dancers will be immersed in a creative environment that incorporates abstract movements such as those seen on the popular show “So You Think You Can Dance”.
The purpose of crew is to learn high calibre dancing from different guest choreographers throughout the year. The crew trains in several different forms of dance including cheerleading, jazz, hip hop, and musical theatre. The crew will be given the opportunity to perform at the Rogers Centre, retirement homes, and possibly selected functions and events in the community. The crew will also have the opportunity to perform all of their crew pieces at the recital in June. It has also been tradition that the Jr. Crew gets to perform a special father-daughter dance in the year-end recital. Students must be 5 years or older to audition.
Crew Technique is a combination of jumps and turns, conditioning and strengthening. Dancers will learn new technical skills, develop their muscles, and increase flexibility.
Performance Team is an introduction to our Crew Performance Programs. They learn a high calibre dance from in-house choreographers. The Performance Team trains in several different forms of upbeat styles of dance including cheerleading, Jazz and Hip Hop. The Performance Team will have the opportunity to perform at high caliber sporting event halftime shows. They will also perform their routine at the recital in June.
Cheerleading is a combination of Jazz, Hip Hop and team spirit. The dancer will get the chance to learn choreography using pom-poms, group lifts and vocal cheers. Dancers will learn musicality, technique, practice isolations and improve upon their flexibility. It is a high energy, fun class that moves to the trendy music of today which children, teens and adults will all recognize and enjoy dancing to.
Boys Hip Hop
This form of dance focuses on style and coordination. The styles of the movements are bouncy, fast, and funky. Fitness classes are a full-body workout combination of cardiovascular activities as well as strengthening the muscles that facilitate dancing. Different workout techniques will be implemented to enhance the dancer’s flexibility and strength.
